Tenhi (meaning something like "wise old man")is a Finnish neofolk band founded in 1996. The sound is melancholic, minimalistic, dark, folk music, usually with acoustic guitars, bass and drums. Piano, violin and flute are used as well. The lyrics are in Finnish, which to me sounds beautifully poetic.
This music is unique, and makes you feel like you are in mystic, beautiful Finnish landscapes in the winter.
Árstíðir (English: Seasons) is an Icelandic indie-folk band formed in 2008. Their vocal-based acoustic sound is a comfortable mix of progressive rock, indie and Icelandic folk music. All six members of the band sing.
Vàli is a Norwegian one-man band featuring peaceful, melancholic, instrumental neofolk. It consists of beautiful acoustic guitar pieces, sometimes accompanied by instruments such as cello, flute and piano. It reminds me of the cold and lonely winters here in northern Norway.
Valravn debuted in 2007, and plays an unusual mix of traditional nordic folk and electronic music. The Faroe Islands singer Anna Katrin Egilstrøð has a powerful hypnotic voice.
"Edgy, atmospheric and deliciously fearless, Valravn drags the listener on a mental and musical journey over sweeping forests and deep into moody waters. The result is strange and wonderful, intensely outlandish and utterly hypnotic."
Folque is a Norwegian folk rock band founded in 1973, featuring mostly acoustic instruments and both female and male vocals. Their sound is closer to folk than rock music. Most of their albums are hard to find.
